Cryptic offseason social media posts have become a fixture of the NFL landscape, but they aren’t always serious. Players understand the power they hold at their fingertips and sometimes use it to troll the public. That appears to be the case with Cam Heyward’s latest post.
“We’re gonna close the book on this season,” Heyward said on his Not Just Football podcast. “I closed the book on this season as well.”
He was clearly trying to stir the pot by referencing this cryptic tweet.
His co-host jokingly called him out for doing that.
“Before you go into that, that was dirty work by you. You know what you were doing,” Hayden Walsh said.
“That was dirty work? All I was saying is I finally get to close the season. It was from Super Bowl day. I had to do stuff on Super Bowl day,” Heyward said.
Heyward was a busy guy during Super Bowl week, I’ll give him that. He co-hosted his podcast with Joey Porter Sr. all week and had several notable guests. Then he wrapped it all up with an appearance on one of the Super Bowl pregame shows. A nice transition to the media should be waiting for him once he decides to hang up his cleats for the final time.
It doesn’t sound like that transition will happen this offseason. Heyward spent most of last week explaining why he still feels like there is work to be done.
T.J. Watt’s cryptic post holding a peace sign during contract negotiations last year is another example. He obviously ended up staying with the team.
Was Heyward’s “closing the book” tweet cryptic with a fairly obvious insinuation? Yes. But let this be a lesson that players like to have fun trolling the public, and their out-of-context posts can often mean completely different things.
