San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Keion White was shot in the ankle during an altercation in San Francisco early Monday.
The 49ers said in a statement that he underwent successful surgery Monday afternoon.
Citing a police report, The San Francisco Standard said White was shot after a verbal altercation with rapper Lil Baby, whose real name is Dominique Jones.
The shooting happened at a nightclub after the Grammy-award winning rapper and his entourage tried to enter White’s private event, the Standard reported.
A witness reportedly went to get assistance from management to de-escalate the situation and heard gunshots. When they returned, White had been shot in the left leg.
The event reportedly involved strippers who were spotted topless, picking up dollar bills on the floor when police entered the club to investigate the shooting.
On Monday, San Francisco police said they responded to a shooting a little after 4 a.m. and found a victim from an apparent gunshot wound, who was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police said the shots were fired by an “unknown suspect” and said no arrests have been made.
White joined the 49ers midway through this season after a trade from New England. White’s old team, the Patriots, lost the Super Bowl on Sunday night to the Seattle Seahawks. The 27-year-old White just finished his third season in the NFL.
This is the second time in the past 18 months that a 49ers’ player has been a victim of a shooting in San Francisco. Receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot in the chest during a robbery attempt on Aug. 31, 2024. A teenager is awaiting trial in juvenile court in that case.
