One day after it was revealed that Brian Callahan would interview for the all-important quarterbacks coaching job, the Giants have hired him.
Callahan’s addition, first reported by the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and confirmed by a league source, continued a trend by new coach John Harbaugh of adding established offensive assistants to his staff. Callahan will be both the quarterbacks coach and the passing-game coordinator.
He will be counted on to get the most out of second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart, who started 12 games as a rookie and finished fourth in the Offensive Rookie of the Year voting.
Callahan, 41, spent the last two seasons as the head coach at Tennessee after working five seasons as the offensive coordinator in Cincinnati, where he helped Joe Burrow develop into one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL.
Before joining the Bengals, he spent three seasons as a quarterbacks coach: two with Detroit (2016-17) and one with the Raiders (2018). He has worked with Matthew Stafford, Derek Carr and Burrow during his career. During his tenure in Tennessee, the Titans went 4-19 as the team struggled with the young duo of Will Levis and Cam Ward at quarterback.
The key offensive assistants on Harbaugh’s first staff with the Giants all have a lot of experience. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, 47, has spent four years in that role and four other seasons as a head coach who called the plays for the Bears.
Offensive line coach Mike Bloomgren, 49, has 13 years of experience as an offensive line coach at the college and NFL level.
Harbaugh’s offensive staff will also include Greg Roman as a senior offensive assistant. Roman, 53, has spent 12 years as an NFL offensive coordinator and has worked for both Jim and John Harbaugh.
