Ibrahima Konate explains why he was given a 'big fine' for Liverpool midway through last season

Ibrahima Konate has recalled a rather costly mistake he made at Liverpool last season.

The French centre-back is a real character in the dressing room, and one who is constantly seen cracking jokes and enjoying every second of his working day.

But after screwing up Liverpool’s travel plans during last season’s Champions League campaign, it’s unlikely Arne Slot and his staff were in a laughing mood.

Konate is still able to see the funny side, though.

Ibrahima Konate on the travel lesson he has learned at Liverpool

Konate was on Liverpool’s TikTok answering a host of travel-related questions.

He explained that his favourite teammates to sit next to are Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, why his destination of choice is Japan — preferably alone — and the one thing he won’t forget to do again.

As Konate puts it: “I will say me [most likely to forget passport], last season I forgot my passport one time.

“It was a big fine, a big, big, big fine, so I can not forget it again.”

Liverpool’s European campaign ended prematurely last season, but they were perfect until falling to eventual winners, PSG.

Slot, in his first season, was already running a tight ship. It ended in a Premier League title win, which obviously means standards were at the very highest.

The question is: What figure warrants three ‘big’s from a player who earns a reported £70k per week? Well actually, David Ornstein said Konate earns double that at Liverpool from what he’s heard.

Konate contract situation lingers over Liverpool

With the months winding down on the 26-year-old’s contract, there is a growing concern that Konate might leave Liverpool in the summer for free.

It would be a familiar feeling for Liverpool fans, who saw Trent Alexander-Arnold do the same last season.

The latest reports indicate contract discussions between Konate and Liverpool are ongoing. They really should look to lock him down. It just doesn’t make sense to lose him right now.

Even if he signs for four years and Liverpool can cash in on him after two, surely that’s better than losing him for free when we’re already under pressure in that position.
