Mikel Arteta will be very happy with his squad right now, apart from midfielder Mikel Merino, who suffered an unfortunate ankle injury in January, which is set to keep him out of action for the majority of the remainder of the season.
Arsenal were linked to adding a midfielder in January to help with squad depth, however, it is now understood they are keen to bring in somebody in the summer instead.
Tottenham tipped to beat Arsenal to Goretzka
It has been a turbulent week for Tottenham already, as they have sacked manager Thomas Frank, after suffering a defeat against Newcastle which leaves them 16th in the Premier League table.
However, despite the uncertainty around the manager position, Spurs are reportedly the frontrunners to land Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka in the summer, even though Arsenal are also interested in the experienced 31-year-old.
According to Football Insider, Spurs are ahead in the race for Goretzka, who is expected to leave Bayern as a free agent in the summer. The German international has won six Bundesliga titles at the Allianz Arena, and one Champions League title.
He’s never played in the Premier League, but it seems as though that could be where his next destination lies with both Arsenal and Spurs keen. However, Arsenal can offer him the more realistic prospect of trophy success, especially considering the current uncertainty at Spurs, so considering the reports say the opposite, it is very much a surprise.
The only difference is that Tottenham can provide more regular game time for the 31-year-old, as he would have to compete with the likes of Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi at Arsenal.
