Ranking the 10 best Premier League center backs in 2026

Most people agree that the Premier League has ascended all the other leagues in European football with the most money, production value, drama, and individual quality than the rest.

Where the Premier League’s difference in quality truly shines out the most than at any other position is at center back, where clubs like Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Arsenal have an embarrassment of riches at the position – and that is not even including all the great underrated defenders at smaller clubs beyond the Big Six.

As 2026 continues, let’s take a look at the 10 finest center backs in the Premier League right now, ranking them in order.

10. Marcos Senesi, Bournemouth

Set to be one of the hottest free agent center backs on the summer 2026 transfer market, Marcos Senesi has been the biggest veteran breakout story of the season, and if this list were solely based on this season’s performances, Senesi would be a sure-fire top-three center back.

He is averaging a combined 3.5 tackles and interceptions per game with 7.6 clearances per contest and 1.3 blocks per game. Those are outrageous numbers, which become even more impressive when you realize the 28-year-old Argentinian international has nearly five assists.

9. Maxence Lacroix, Crystal Palace

Overshadowed by Marc Guehi, Maxence Lacroix will now step even more into the spotlight after the England international finally got his big move away from Palace, joining Premier League title contenders Manchester City.

Lacroix has been a quality but heavily underrated center back for years, as he was a star for Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga before earning a move to the Premier League, where he has become a more disciplined player and is able to maximize his physical strength and athletic capabilities in England.

This season, Lacroix is averaging 3.3 combined tackles and interceptions per game compared to just 0.3 dribbles completed allowed per match, and at 25 years of age, another season like this will have Lacroix flirting with the elite in the top five of the Premier League center backs.

8. Cristian Romero, Tottenham

It goes to show you just how amazing the Premier League is in terms of quality these days at the center back position that World Cup winner Cristian Romero is only barely in the top 10 – and teammate Micky van de Ven isn’t even on the list.

Of course, some of that is on Romero, whose disciplinary issues have cost the team in important games this season, and although he has won Spurs a few matches this season, he’s also lost them a couple and genuinely looks mentally checked out at times.

You couldn’t blame Romero for that, though, as Tottenham are shambolic and clearly did not fulfill the promises they gave to him. On talent alone, Romero is world-class and is one of the best center backs on the planet with the ball at his feet, including at scoring goals.

7. Fabian Schar, Newcastle

A far more subdued and underappreciated player than Romero, Fabian Schar is also slightly better, as the ageless Newcastle wonder seems to always come up with the goods for the Magpies in important games and leads by example; you never hear about him letting his team down.

Together, Schar and the resurgent Malick Thiaw have formed one of Europe’s best center back partnerships, though, again, it feels like in the rush to praise the newcomer from AC Milan, the Swiss international remains flying under the radar.

Schar barely ever has to make a tackle, his reading of the game is so good. He is a machine at clearing out danger, cleaning up messes, and making everyone else around him shine defensively.

6. Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk has had way better seasons at the back end of the Liverpool defense, but he’s also had to deftly navigate a lot of instability with new pieces and a bevy of injuries and underperforming players on the defense.

A legend of the Premier League, Van Dijk is still one of the best Premier League center backs even in a season when things are not going right for Liverpool, which is a testament to his presence.

5. Josko Gvardiol, Manchester City

In terms of pure talent and athleticism, Josko Gvardiol is in a league of his own, even compared to other insanely athletic Premier League central defenders like Cristian Romero and William Saliba.

Gvardiol can score goals from sheer nothingness and has the technique on the ball that even elite offensive fullbacks are envious of. His raw defending is tremendous, too, though Gvardiol can sometimes be a ticking time bomb with his mistakes.

4. Marc Guehi, Manchester City

It is straight up unfair that a team as loaded as Manchester City with Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal and Ruben Dias and Gvardiol at the center back positions was able to get Marc Guehi as a winter transfer – and Liverpool fans will be especially upset with their rivals since they had a deal with Crystal Palace signed and sealed at the summer transfer deadline before Oliver Glasner threw a tantrum.

Guehi is a ridiculously good defender with the athleticism, intelligence, on the ball ability, and game to game consistency and leadership that most players would die for.

He has been the elevating player for Crystal Palace for years, he has proven himself on the level of the England national team as their best defender, and now he is about to make an even bigger name for himself at one of Europe’s most prestigious clubs in Manchester City.

3. William Saliba, Arsenal

Quietly, William Saliba has been a bit of a letdown this season. There is no doubt that he has been very good, as usual, but he has been behind the other elite Premier League center backs in terms of quality, including teammate Gabriel Magalhaes.

Still, Saliba is the definition of a Rolls Royce center backs and is the most talented overall player at the position in the league. His covering speed, passing quality, ball carrying, and one on one defending are all elite. He just needs to be more assertive and active at actually winning possession for Arsenal to reach that next level as the world’s best.

2. Ruben Dias, Manchester City

A former Premier League Player of the Season, Ruben Dias is one of those footballers whose consistent greatness over the years has led to him being almost taken for granted, even by those who regularly follow the English top flight.

The 28-year-old Portuguese international is the definition of a leader, and you really have to go back into your Roledex in order to remember when was the last time he made a mistake or had a truly bad game.

Dias is nearly flawless with his passing, he puts his body on the line to make tackles, and his reading of the game has advanced to a point where he knows what strikers will instinctively do before they themselves can even process it.

1. Gabriel Magalhaes, Arsenal

For my money, though, the benchmark for center backs in the Premier League in 2026 is another Arsenal star in Gabriel Magalhaes. He has been an amazing defender since his days at Lille, but over the years in North London, he has progressed even further with each and every season.

Arsenal fans have always known Gabriel’s quality, but it feels like a lot of people are not realizing just how much better he is getting year over year, sneaking up on them with his greatness.

Brutally strong in the tackle, impervious in the air, and now one of the best on the ball center backs in the world in his own right, Gabriel is having a season for the ages for Arsenal in 2025/26 and is a legitimate Premier League Player of the Season despite receiving very little fanfare.
