The European Super League scandal still hangs over the modern game like a dark cloud, a reminder of how quickly football’s powerbrokers tried to redraw the sport in their own image. Real Madrid, driven by president Florentino Perez, were not just involved but were one of the chief architects of the breakaway, pushing the idea that an elite, closed competition was needed to “save” football and protect the biggest clubs’ finances.

For Liverpool, the story played out very differently; while the club initially signed up alongside England’s other so‑called “Big Six”, the move triggered furious fan protests at Anfield, across the city and online, with banners, walkouts and widespread condemnation.

The backlash was so intense that within 48 hours Liverpool withdrew, and principal owner John W. Henry was forced to record a sombre video message, staring straight down the camera as he accepted full responsibility and apologised to supporters, staff and Jurgen Klopp for the “disruption” and “unnecessary negativity” the decision had caused.

However, it seems that bookmark can finally be put in the scandal, with governing body UEFA putting out a statement that basically affirms that the issue of the Super League is now closed with Real Madrid:

“UEFA, European Football Clubs and Real Madrid CF reach agreement for the good of European club football. This agreement of principles will also serve to resolve their legal disputes related to the European Super League, once such principles are executed and implemented,” the statement reads.

“Following months of discussions conducted in the best interests of European football, UEFA, European Football Clubs (EFC), and Real Madrid CF announce that they have reached an agreement of principles for the well-being of European club football, respecting the principle of sporting merit with emphasis on long-term club sustainability and the enhancement of fan experience through the use of technology.”

“This agreement of principles will also serve to resolve their legal disputes related to the European Super League, once such principles are executed and implemented.”
