A former top pick of the New York Jets, Sam Darnold was labeled a bust for much of his career until a stint with the San Francisco 49ers turned the tide on his professional future.
Darnold admitted he learned what it takes to be a starting quarterback in the NFL while studying Brock Purdy and learning from head coach Kyle Shanahan. His development continued under Kevin O’Connell as he led the Minnesota Vikings to a 14-win season and the playoffs.
Just one year later he hoisted the Lombardi Trophy as the Seattle Seahawks dominated the New England Patriots 29-13 to win Super Bowl LX.
Following the biggest win of his career, Darnold received a strong message of support from his fiancee Katie Hoofnagle.
“And despite everything, you remained kind. in moments where it would've been so easy to make excuses or put the blame on somebody else, you never wavered. your patience, respect, discipline, and humility have continuously shone through, even on the hardest days of the journey,” she said on a message on Instagram.
“it's an honor and a privilege to share you with the world on Sundays, and I'm so grateful that you finally got your flowers on the biggest stage. as long as I'm alive, you'll always have someone who is proud of you in everything that you do. Earned, not deserved. LFG 14. LFG SEAHAWKS. YOUR SBLX CHAMPIONS, EVERYONE!!!”
Darnold handed Hoofnagle a ring in July 2025 before winning one of his own.
