After the 2025 NFL season came to a crushing end for the Buffalo Bills, the team revealed star quarterback Josh Allen might need surgery on his foot.
The announcement from the Bills came after the team’s decision to fire head coach Sean McDermott and eventually hire former offensive coordinator Sean Brady as the team’s new head coach. It’s been a busy offseason for the Bills, who entered an AFC playoff race without the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson and still couldn’t get the job done.
That busy offseason continued on Wednesday, Feb. 11 when the team signed a familiar face.

The Bills announced the addition of quarterback Shane Buechele on a one-year contract.
The former Texas Longhorns quarterback started his career with Kansas City in 2021 as an undrafted free agent and eventually signed to the Chiefs’ practice squad as a rookie. The Bills then signed Buechele to their practice squad in 2023 after he was waived by Kansas City.
After spending the 2024 season on injured reserve, he was released by Buffalo before the start of the 2025 season and re-signed to its practice squad. Kansas City swooped in to re-sign the quarterback to their active roster after the season-ending injury to Mahomes and he made his NFL debut against the Las Vegas Raiders, completing seven of 14 passes for 88 yards.
Buechele was picked up by Buffalo again and added back to their practice squad in January as the Bills entered the playoffs.
