Wayne State Head Football Coach Tyrone Wheatley Shocks Team with Announcement

Former 1995 New York Giants first-round draft pick Tyrone Wheatley shocked his school and team by resigning as head coach.

As the 2026 College Football offseason continues, many teams, players, and now alumni must make decisions on their future. This week, Wayne State head coach Tyrone Wheatley shocked his team as he stepped down.

Wheatley oversaw a disastrous 2025 campaign where the Wayne State Warriors didn’t win a single game. The games weren’t particularly close, either.

Former Michigan football assistant coach Tyrone Wheatley, the winner of Hal Schram award, speaks to the crowd during the 2015 Detroit Free Press Football Awards Banquet on Sunday, December 13, 2015, in Dearborn.

The Division II program, which hired Wheatley in 2023, went 5-28 in three seasons with the former Oakland Raider as head coach. Despite this, the school was seemingly willing to give him another season as head coach.

According to reports, the move comes as a bit of a shock. Wheatley didn’t address the team directly and skipped the team’s banquet gathering this past weekend. Coaching can be a grind at any level of competition–Wheatley perhaps needed a break.

Wayne State announced on Tuesday that Terrence Isaac, who joined Wheatley’s staff for 2026, was promoted to the head coach position. Isaac was the head coach of Rochester C&T before joining the staff, ending up in an unexpected promotion.

Wheatley was a former 1995 first-round pick by the New York Giants. He played 10 years in the NFL before beginning his coaching career in 2007.
