The Mandalorian & Grogu’s Controversial Super Bowl Trailer Secretly Reveals The Movie’s Plot

The Super Bowl LX commercial for The Mandalorian and Grogu has proven to be controversial, with many fans left disappointed and concerned by the decision to parody a famous Budweiser advertisement instead of releasing a more traditional trailer. Despite only about three months left to go before the upcoming Star Wars movie releases in theaters on May 22, the plot has mostly been kept under wraps.

The few details known about The Mandalorian and Grogu's story include Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his apprentice taking on the Imperial Remnant and that along the way they will encounter New Republic Colonel Ward (Sigourney Weaver), Star Wars Rebels fan-favorite Zeb Orrelios (Steve Blum), Rotta the Hutt (Jeremy Allen White), Anzellans, and BDX droids. On the surface, the Super Bowl commercial doesn't divulge much more, but one moment secretly reveals the heart of the movie's plot.

The Mandalorian & Grogu’s Story Is Din Djarin Handing The Reins To His Apprentice

In the commercial, Din and Grogu are riding a carriage pulled by tauntauns on a snowy planet. The most pivotal moment is when Din hands the reins over to Grogu, who begins to steer the tauntauns and the carriage. While it is cute and part of the Budweiser parody, this transition is symbolic and gives a good idea of The Mandalorian and Grogu's plot, which is Din giving the reins to his apprentice.

Instead of this just being another story where Din and Grogu go on adventures and fight the Imperial Remnant, the movie is seemingly going to focus on Grogu being given more responsibility and ownership as he grows up in ways that he hasn't before. The first Mandalorian and Grogu trailer released in September 2025 already teased this with shots of Grogu swimming on his own, navigating through a dark tunnel with an Anzellan, and riding in a small vehicle with multiple Anzellans.

None of these shots feature Din, and while it could be a matter of clever trailer editing, it seems more likely that Grogu is branching out more on his own, with Din placing more trust in him. The Mandalorian season 3 has already set this up with Grogu being the one to get help by himself when Din is trapped in the ruins of Mandalore. Grogu also takes initiative and saves his father figure in The Mandalorian season 3 finale.

As seen in the first trailer, Din will still be involved in plenty of action, including in a gladiatorial arena. This time around, though, he and Grogu are poised to be partners instead of just being the beloved character's protector, which is further indicated by the title being The Mandalorian and Grogu instead of just The Mandalorian. The snowy planet and tauntauns are also a potential hint that the duo will be headed to Hoth, the iconic planet that first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back.
