'People will laugh at me': Why Ally McCoist is refusing to write off Liverpool’s trophy chances

Liverpool’s season might still end in celebrations, according to Ally McCoist.

When you look back 12 months, it was sheer bliss being a Liverpool fan.

Every week at Anfield was a celebration of sorts, with the Reds fully in control of the title race.

Fast forward to now, and it’s a very different feeling. What a difference a year can make.

But the silver lining of this disappointment of a season has been the performances we have seen in Europe. And that’s where McCoist thinks the season could be redeemed.

Ally McCoist says Liverpool can win the Champions League

As inconsistent as Liverpool’s Premier League form has been, they have looked far better against continental opposition.

The Reds finished third in the league phase, only behind Arsenal and Bayern Munich.

McCoist thinks Slot’s men can keep up this momentum through the knockout stages as well, and maybe even all the way.

He said on talkSPORT: People will laugh at me. I still think they’ve got a chance to win the Champions League. I do. I just think some teams.

“Listen, they could get knocked out just as easy. But I actually think they’ve got a chance to win it because it’s a tournament that they know. It’s a tournament that they can play against anybody. They’re confident in it.

“And I think bizarrely it’s a tournament where teams open up more against them than they do domestically. Yeah. And I think there’s a certain degree that suits them 100%.”

Slot has discussed the Champions League difference himself, and with the league title out of frame, he probably wants to put everything into the competition.

The problem with that, is in order for Liverpool to put their focus on Europe, they need to be somewhat comfortable with regards to qualifying in the top five for next season’s edition, should it not go to plan.

Liverpool have to get back in the top four in time for knockouts

Man United and Chelsea dropped points on Tuesday, and they will drop more after their new manager bounce edge wears off.

Luckily, the playoffs come first, which Liverpool avoided with a top-eight finish.

Maximum points over these next three games is really what’s needed, so that by the time the Champions League takes precedence, we can give ourselves the best possible chance.
