SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Now that Super Bowl LX is over, the Bay Area is getting ready to host the next batch of big games with the upcoming Men's FIFA World Cup this summer.
But after already securing games for the latter, the Bay Area Host Committee is now shifting its focus to another large sporting event: the 2031 Women's FIFA World Cup, according to a report from The Mercury News.
"Personally, I want to bring a women’s event here — that would be really meaningful to me," host committee CEO Zaileen Janmohamed said during a press conference Monday in which the Bay Area passed the Super Bowl torch to next year's host, Los Angeles, according to the report. "We’ll see how that goes, but we saw what happened this week when an event comes into this market. This place is awesome for hosting an event."
The committee submitted Levi's Stadium and Oracle Park as potential venues for the 2031 tournament. Games in the Bay Area for the upcoming Men's FIFA World Cup will take place at Levi's Stadium.
The Bay Area previously hosted World Cup matches for the 1994 men's and 1999 women's tournaments. Those games were played at Stanford Stadium.
The 2023 Women's World Cup, hosted in Australia and New Zealand, saw more than $570 million generated in revenue, according to ESPN. FIFA expects the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil to produce one billion dollars in revenue.
