The Golden State Warriors could trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo and add LeBron James this summer amid his uncertain Los Angeles Lakers future.
The future of LeBron James appears more likely to see him leaving the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason with some other teams already in his mind. James is starting to see the writing on the wall with the Lakers prioritizing building around Luka Doncic. The upcoming free agency will see LeBron having to figure out his next move, whether ending his career in Los Angeles or finding a new home.
ESPN insider Brian Windhorst has covered James extensively from his high school years to now and revealed that he sees four realistic teams for LeBron:
“Cleveland is one of them. I’m not sure I’d put the Heat on the list. Golden State depending on how things go would be one. There’s a place of two that I won’t say right now that I’m keeping my eye on. I have a team or two that I think he could consider going to and I have researched the concept and I will continue to keep my eye on the concept.”
No reporter has better insight into James’ camp and their decisions. The Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors both make perfect sense, but two mystery teams add even more drama surrounding an exciting offseason less than five months away.
Cleveland & Golden State Are LeBron Candidates
The Cavaliers showed extra love to LeBron for the Lakers’ road game there a few weeks ago with a special tribute video and a loud ovation from the hometown fans. Since then, rumors have been running wild about James potentially ending his career where it started.
LeBron retiring at home and playing his final game with the franchise most synonymous with his success is certainly realistic. Cleveland has a lot of great talents on the roster to give James a chance to contend for another NBA Championship before retiring.
Golden State has been reportedly interested in acquiring LeBron for over two seasons now. The dream scenario of James and Stephen Curry teaming up years after their iconic rivalry would create a box office attraction for the league. However, Windhorst says it’s likely dependent on the Warriors improving the overall roster to build a true contender.
Which Mystery Teams Could Tempt LeBron?
The most interesting comment from Windhorst focused on saying he sees two dark horse teams he’s not ready to name just yet. James is one of the most calculated superstars in NBA history, so he would likely only sign in places that present him a special opportunity.
Another early elimination for the New York Knicks could see LeBron join as the missing piece, especially since he’s talked about his love for playing in Madison Square Garden. Other teams like the Detroit Pistons, San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves could provide a scenario for an easier path to a title if he takes less money.
Windhorst made sure to mention that he doesn’t believe a reunion with the Miami Heat is realistic as it currently stands. Teams around the league will definitely want to add a player of LeBron’s skill set and reputation, but it is clear he will have a short list of realistic teams.
