Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany Mahomes, are making big moves off the field this offseason.

After finishing the season 6-11, the Kansas City Chiefs failed to make the playoffs for the first time in a decade. Making matters worse, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL and MCL in Week 15.

While Mahomes focuses on rehab, he’s gunning to be ready for Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season — the three-time Super Bowl MVP and his wife, Brittany Mahomes, are making big moves with the Kansas City Current.

Brittany, a former soccer player, is a founding co-owner of the KC Current alongside owners Chris and Angie Long. Mahomes joined as a co-owner in January 2023. The Current were not only the fastest team to win the NWSL Shield this season, but they also finished the regular season as the No. 1-ranked team in the league and broke several league records.

The Current scored the most points (65), recorded the most wins (21), most shutouts (16), consecutive shutout minutes (869), multi-goal wins (15), and more. While they were considered the runaway favorite to win the NWSL championship, they lost to Gotham FC (No. 8) in the quarterfinals.

Following the stunning upset in November, the franchise pulled the trigger on two big moves on February 11.

The Current Made a Blockbuster Trade for Croix Bethune, Sent Claire Hutton to Bay FC

The Current stunned fans by trading away Clair Hutton to Bay FC for $1.1 million in intra-league transfer funds — one of the highest transfer fees in the NWSL, per The AP.

To say fans were upset would be an understatement. One fan commented on the team’s Instagram announcement, “Nooooooooooo 😢.” Another person wrote, “This just pissed me off WHY 😭.” One woman complained, “So we’ve decided we just don’t want to win any games next year? What is going on?”

Hutton, 20, who’s also a midfielder for the U.S. national team, was named to the NWSL Best XI First Team. What the Current announced next, however, left Current fans thrilled.

The Current replaced Hutton by acquiring midfielder Croix Bethune, with the Washington Spirit receiving the third-largest return in NWSL history. The Spirit received a club-record $100,000 in allocation funds and $900,000 in transfer threshold funds, Forbes reported.

Bethune, who won the 2024 Midfielder of the Year and Rookie of the Year Award, “is an exceptional playmaker with limitless potential,” KC Current general manager Ryan Dell said in a statement. “Her elite creativity and passing ability combined with her tactical versatility – plus her resilience and passion – make her a great fit for our club, on and off the pitch.”

Next up for the Current, taking on the San Diego Wave at the Coachella Valley Invitational on February 15.

While this season didn’t end with a championship title, the future remains brighter than ever in Kansas City. Four years after the Current played their first game of the 2021 season, they’ve become the second-most valuable franchise in the NWSL. Despite being the fourth-smallest market team, the Current owns the second-highest valuation of $275 million.

After opening CPKC Stadium, the first premier sports venue built primarily for a women’s sports team, Forbes reported that the KC Current generated a league-high $36 million in revenue in 2024.

Over the summer, the Longs announced a $52 million investment in a three-tiered expansion of the team’s facilities in Riverside, Missouri. They broke ground in July on building Riverside Stadium, a 35,000-square-foot performance center, and a pitch expansion.
