‘Guardiola on the prowl’ – Manchester City want ‘new Cafu’

Wesley

In January, Sport Witness covered claims from Brazil about Manchester City’s interest in AS Roma’s Wesley.

At that point, Globo Esporte spoke of contact between the Citizens and the wing-back’s entourage. Pep Guardiola’s side wanted to explore the conditions of a deal, with Tottenham and Newcastle United also interested.

Now, talk around Manchester City and Wesley is growing and it has been covered by the Italian media today.

Manchester City and Wesley picked up in Italy

Today’s Corriere dello Sport report that ‘Guardiola is on the prowl’ for the Brazilian, who is winning over many in Rome.

There is belief that even if Manchester City offer €50m in the summer, it won’t be enough for Roma. This is also because Wesley has emerged as Gian Piero Gasperini’s favourite this season.

On top of that, his contract runs out in 2030, making it difficult for any club to land him. Roma paid €25m to sign him from Flamengo in the summer and his value has now skyrocketed.

Big Wesley praise offered

Further, the report hails how the 22-year-old has adapted to life in Europe. He was previously not as disciplined as he is now, having grown into Gasperini’s ‘dream winger’.

He hasn’t just starred at right wing-back, having also slotted in very well at left wing-back. Wesley has three goals in Serie A, starting each of the last four league games.

Considering all of that, the newspaper is not surprised about Manchester City’s interest.

As of now though, a deal feels quite complex for Guardiola’s side. Wesley wants to become the ‘new Cafu’ and is only focused on progressing further as a player.

If Manchester City want him, they would have to pay big money in the summer. The report is also one way of establishing the player’s market value, especially since attention on the Brazilian will grow.

He can also play at the World Cup under Carlo Ancelotti. That can be decisive in taking Wesley’s reputation to new heights later this year.
