Virgil van Dijk makes claim on Sunderland pitch after Liverpool win

Virgil van Dijk rose highest when Liverpool needed him most on Wednesday night, powering home a second‑half header at the Stadium of Light to keep Arne Slot’s side right in the thick of the Champions League race and etch his name into the club record books.

For long spells it looked like another frustrating night on the road for Liverpool, who had to navigate a fired‑up Sunderland side protecting an unbeaten home record in the Premier League this season. Florian Wirtz clipped the post in the first half and chances went begging for Hugo Ekitike and Mohamed Salah as the pressure slowly built.

The breakthrough finally came just after the hour mark, when Salah’s inswinging corner was met by Van Dijk, his glancing header too powerful to be hooked off the line as Habib Diarra could only help it into the roof of the net. That single moment ended Sunderland’s impressive 14‑match unbeaten home run and secured a gritty 1-0 win that felt bigger than just three points.

Speaking after the game, Virgil van Dijk revealed that he found the pitch at the Stadium of Light “interesting” and “difficult”:

“A great win, hard work, on a very interesting, difficult pitch,” he said as quoted by the Sunderland Echo. “Recover and go again on the weekend. It was quite a circumstance, but to come here and to play like we did today was a well-deserved three points. I think they showed this season how difficult it is to beat them and a lot of credit to them – it is a hard-working team. It is good to come here and for us to win and keep the clean sheet. A good match for us.”

“Ibo [Ibrahima Konaté] was outstanding, Macca [Alexis Mac Allister] in front. Everyone was putting a shift in. Proud of the guys as they worked so hard.”

It was reported by Lewis Steele that Sunderland had a mushroom infestation on their pitch last week. It caused a WSL2 fixture between Sunderland Women and Sheffield United Women to have to be played at another location.

However, while it did not interrupt proceedings for the Reds on Wednesday night, it seems the Black Cats groundmans had to treat the pitch that caused the “interesting” experience as Van Dijk calls it.

Meanwhile, Van Dijk’s goal in Sunderland carried a slice of history with it, as it moved him onto 23 Premier League strikes for Liverpool, the most ever by a Reds defender in the competition. In doing so, the captain moved one clear of club legend Sami Hyypiä.
