Liverpool have 12 fixtures left to play in the Premier League this season as they aim for the top four
Liverpool have found it hard to find consistency in the Premier League this season. They are positioned down in 6th place in the table. The Reds are battling it out with the likes of Aston Villa, Manchester United and Chelsea for the top five.
Arne Slot’s side won 1-0 away at Sunderland on Wednesday night. Defender Virgil van Dijk scored their winner against the Black Cats at the Stadium of Light. They are back in action this weekend at home to Brighton and Hove Albion as they aim to build some momentum.
How many points do Liverpool need to get into the Champions League?
Liverpool have 12 fixtures left to play as they look to accumulate enough wins to finish 5th or higher. They won the title last year but have struggled this time around to reach the same heights. Using Opta data, here is a look at an updated predicted table, as per the The Analyst....
Arsenal, 83 points
Manchester City, 75 points
Aston Vila, 71 points
Liverpool, 63 points
Chelsea, 63 points
Manchester United, 62 points
Brentford, 58 points
AFC Bournemouth, 54 points
Newcastle United, 53 points
Everton, 52 points
Current league table
Arsenal, 56 points
Manchester City, 53 points
Aston Villa, 50 points
Manchester United, 45 points
Chelsea, 44 points
Liverpool, 42 points
Brentford, 39 points
Everton, 37 points
AFC Bournemouth, 37 points
Newcastle United, 36 points
According to this data, Liverpool need 21 points to get into the Champions League. That means they need seven wins from their remaining 12 matches. Opta has predicted them to get over the line along with Aston Villa and Chelsea, with Manchester United missing out along with outsiders like Brentford, AFC Bournemouth, Newcastle Unted and Everton.
What now for Liverpool as they chase down the top four?
Liverpool will hope their victory at Sunderland can give them the confidence to go on a run now. Chelsea threw away a 2-0 lead at home to Leeds United in their last outing to draw 2-2. Meanwhile, Manchester United dropped points against West Ham at the London Stadium in their 1-1 draw.
Therefore, the Reds have had a decent week and will be hoping for more of the same this weekend as they gear up to play Brighton. Their upcoming opponents have been struggling for results recently and lost 1-0 at Aston Villa in their last match. Pressure is starting to grow on Fabian Hurzeler.
Speaking after Liverpool’s win against the Black Cats, Slot said: “We've shown that response so many times already this season and now it's not the consistency and the results because it's not a coincidence that we win here tonight, or that we've won our games, because we're usually the better team on the pitch. It's more surprising to see that from all the times that we were the better team we didn't make wins. But actually, today you could again see the reason why.
“If you create so many chances and also moments where we could have four-versus-three situations or three-versus-two situations then that should with the quality we have - and that will, by the way - lead to us scoring much more chances and much more goals.”
