The Los Angeles Chargers coaching revamp continues after it was announced that they have hired former NFL head coach Adam Gase to work under new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel.

Gase has not coached in the NFL since being fired by the New York Jets back in 2020. However, he has returned to the new-look Chargers staff under head coach Jim Harbaugh. Following the end of their 2025 season, which saw them beaten in the AFC Wild Card Round by the New England Patriots, the Chargers head coach opted to ring the changes on offense.

Los Angeles fired offensive coordinator Greg Roman, alongside their offensive line coach Mike Devlin and run game coordinator and tight ends coach Andy Bischoff. Elsewhere, the Chargers will have to deal with a new foe next year after their AFC West rivals, the Las Vegas Raiders, unveiled their new head coach. After firing Roman, Harbaugh hired former Miami Dolphins head coach McDaniel, in a move that could lead to offensive fireworks next season for the Chargers.

The 42-year-old is one of the NFL's top offensive minds, having worked under Kyle Shanahan for the majority of his career prior to taking the Dolphins job back in 2022.

McDaniel will be supported by Gase, who has been hired as an assistant coach and will oversee the Chargers' passing game. The Chargers have also added Butch Barry as their new offensive line coach and Max McCaffrey as their running backs coach.

McCaffrey is the brother of San Francisco 49ers star Christian McCaffrey.

He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent back in 2016. Come 2020, he moved into coaching, working for Northern Colorado before being hired by McDaniel as an offensive assistant.

Clearly, the former NFL wide receiver made an impact upon McDaniel, with McCaffrey being named the Chargers' new running backs coach at the age of just 31 years old.

The Chargers are expected to hire another former Dolphins coach, Chandler Henley, who also worked under McDaniel. The former served as Miami's run game specialist, meaning McDaniel will be joined in Los Angeles by three coaches who worked under him last season.

Speaking at his unveiling last month, McDaniel, who was in the running for several head coaching jobs, said: "There was a lot that I found very attractive.

"I was fortunate to have some opportunities, but it started with Coach Harbaugh. To be a part of an organization that has the legacy of Sid and Air Coryell, I was super attracted to.

"Got a quarterback who I’ve always admired, and just a lot of young players. A great situation for my family and me to go to the next chapter."
