Darwin Nunez left Liverpool last summer to join the Saudi Pro League club Al-Hill for £46 million.

Former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has been left out of Al-Hilal’s Saudi Pro League squad.

The centre-forward has been deemed surplus to requirements by Al-Hilal for the rest of their domestic season, per Fabrizio Romano. The arrival of former Real Madrid and France marksman Karim Benzema leaves Nunez somewhat in limbo with the World Cup just four months away.

The Uruguay international is still able to play in the AFC Champions League - but cannot feature in the Saudi Pro League. That is despite Nunez scoring seven goals and producing five assists since joining the Riyadh-based side after leaving Liverpool for a fee of £46 million.

Nunez was linked with an exit from Al-Hilal before the winter transfer window closed. Turkish giants Fenerbahce were supposedly keen but a transfer did not materialise.

Nunez was a cult figure at Liverpool after joining from Benfica for an initial £64 million in 2022. However, he struggled for consistency and he spent much of last season down the pecking order as the Reds were crowned Premier League champions. In total, the 25-year-old scored 40 goals and created 26 in 143 appearances during his three-year Anfield stay.
