How Mo Salah broke and equalled Steven Gerrard record on the same night

Mohamed Salah may be struggling for the same elite level of output for Liverpool this season, but his assist against Sunderland still broke Steven Gerrard‘s record.

Salah’s in-swinging corner was nodded in by Virgil van Dijk to earn a 1-0 victory away to Sunderland on Wednesday night.

It ended the only remaining undefeated home record in the Premier League and, for Salah, also equalled a long-standing Liverpool record.

The Egyptian recorded his 93rd assist in the English top flight, lifting him above Gerrard into seventh in the all-time rankings.

With 92 league assists for Liverpool (the other for Chelsea), Salah is now tied with Gerrard for the most for the club in the Premier League era.

2 Kevin De Bruyne Belgium 2 119

3 Cesc Fàbregas Spain 2 111

=7 David Silva Spain 1 93

9 Steven Gerrard England 1 92

Note: *Denotes active players. Kevin De Bruyne departed the league in summer 2025. Salah equalled David Silva’s tally on February 11, 2026, while matching Steven Gerrard‘s club record of 92 assists for Liverpool.

Salah is now level with David Silva for all-time Premier League assists and only 10 away from leapfrogging Silva (93), Dennis Bergkamp (94) and Frank Lampard (102) into the top five.

While it is unlikely he will do so this season there is a strong chance Salah can achieve that feat if he stays with Liverpool for the remainder of his contract to 2027.

He is already fourth in the all-time Premier League scoring charts, with his 190 goals behind only Alan Shearer (260), Harry Kane (213) and Wayne Rooney (208).

Having scored 29 in the league last season Salah had been expected to overtake Rooney and possibly even Kane to second place this time around, but it has been a wholly disappointing campaign for the 33-year-old.

In 18 games in the Premier League so far this season, he has only scored four goals and assisted a further six – per FotMob, only 12 players have more goals and assists combined in 2025/26 but it is still poor by his standards.

“That’s very nice for him again,” Slot said in his post-match interview of Salah’s record.

“He has so many records already for this club, but to have this one, tied with such a great player [means more].

“Both are unbelievable players for this club, have meant so much for this club. That they are now together, unfortunately for Steven I expect Mo to go above him!”

According to LFCHistory, Salah is already fifth in Liverpool’s entire history for assists in all competitions, with his 117 in 427 games behind only Kenny Dalglish (172), Gerrard (145), Billy Liddell (132) and Ian Callaghan (131).

Of those five players only Dalglish (2.99 games per assist) has a better rate of games per assist than Salah (3.65).
