Jaren Jackson Jr. To Undergo Season-Ending Left Knee Surgery

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Jazz forward Jaren Jackson Jr. will likely miss the rest of the season as he undergoes surgery on his left knee, the team announced on Thursday.

NBA Insider Chris Haynes first reported the news, and it was later confirmed by the Jazz via a press release.

We announced today that Jaren Jackson Jr. will undergo surgery to remove a localized pigmented villonodular synovitis growth in his left knee.

The good news for Jackson Jr. and Utah is that the operation is mostly preventative.

PVNS stands for Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis, and it means that Jackson Jr. has a small growth that has developed inside his knee joint. If left alone, the growth can eventually damage the surrounding bone and cartilage.

Surgeons will go in and cut the small mass out of the joint. More good news, the procedure isn’t nearly as structurally invasive as what is required with a torn ACL or meniscus.

The typical timetable for recovering from the surgery is about 3-4 months.

Jackson Jr. was acquired by Utah last week before the trade deadline in a deal that saw the Jazz send out four players and three future first-round picks.

In his first three games with the team, he averaged 22.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 2.0 steals on 49 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three.

The Jazz went 2-1 in his first three appearances.
