LSU football will be playing a future game at the home of the Dallas Cowboys

LSU football will play a regular-season game in AT&T Stadium in 2027, according to a Thursday morning report.

SMU is relocating its home games against Oklahoma in 2027 and LSU in 2029 to the Dallas Cowboys' home stadium in Arlington, Texas, sources told On3. It’s the first time the Mustangs have played in the Cowboys’ stadium since the early 1980s.

The two games against the SEC opponents were moved for “branding and revenue opportunities,” the report said. SMU’s home stadium, Gerald J. Ford Stadium, has a capacity of 33,200, while AT&T Stadium has a capacity of 80,000 fans.

LSU’s Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge has a capacity of 102,321, for reference.

The Tigers have recent history of playing in AT&T Stadium for neutral site games, including quarterback Joe Burrow's first college start in a 33-17 win over Miami in the 2018 Cowboys Classic.

SMU has a home-and-home series with LSU in 2028 and 2029. The 2029 game at AT&T Stadium is set for Sept. 1. The 2028 matchup will be the first football game between the schools since 1934.

The most successful stretch of SMU football was played from 1979 to 1986, when the Mustangs shared a home with the Cowboys. That era was highlighted by legendary running back Eric Dickerson.

SMU has seen a program resurgence in recent years under head coach Rhett Lashlee. The program went 10-3 in 2023 and 2024, the first back-to-back 10-or-more-win seasons since 1981-84.
