Nottingham face Liverpool in their next Premier League game and will do so without Sean Dyche in charge as he was sacked on Thursday

Sean Dyche has been sacked by Nottingham Forest after a 0-0 draw with Wolves on Wednesday night - and with Liverpool lined up as their next Premier League game.

The result leaves Forest three points clear of West Ham in 18th but despite losing just one in six games, the draw with Wolves proved to be the final straw for the City Ground club, who wasted little time in dismissing Dyche. A club statement was released shortly after midnight on Thursday, with just 57 words offered as an explanation.

It read: “Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that Sean Dyche has been relieved of his duties as head coach.

“We would like to thank Sean and his staff for their efforts during their time at the Club and we wish them the best of luck for the future. We will be making no further comment at this time.”

Dyche’s only loss in the last six games came against Leeds United at Elland Road last week. They did beat West Ham at the London Stadium a couple of months back, in a result that could have a huge bearing on the survival battle.

Forest are two points behind Tottenham, who sacked Thomas Frank on Wednesday, and three behind Leeds. They are only four points behind Brighton and Hove Albion and five adrift of Crystal Palace after both clubs lost on Wednesday night.

The ex-Everton boss oversaw a 3-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield earlier in the season. Forest now host the Reds on February 22 but Dyche will not be at the helm. After Liverpool, they take on Brighton and Man City in their following league games.

He was only in charge of Forest for 114 days as they now seek their fourth manager of the season. They sacked Nuno Espirito Santo and replaced him with Ange Postecoglou before also relieving the ex-Spurs man of his duties.

After beating Liverpool back in November, Dyche said: “I’m so pleased for the players, they have taken on a lot since we’ve been here and we’ve demanded a lot from them in many different ways.

“I’ve said to them after the game that we can only guide them. The commitment to the cause and to the shirt was all on display today, and quality of course which you need. You don’t win by luck here.

“The will and demand, the team and the organisation is massively important in these games. They’ve shown that in abundance and when we’ve needed the quality, they’ve delivered.

“You aren’t likely to come here and dominate the ball, so without it you have to be diligent and I thought we were super diligent, from our shape to our organisation.

“Our defenders were making blocks, Matz was looking confident in goal and we looked full of confidence.

“I do believe there is quality here and in the moments of truth, can you make that pass or find that finish, and we certainly did today.”
