With the Super Bowl in the rearview mirror, the Minnesota Vikings have officially been joined in offseason mode by all of their competitors. This is a significant winter for a reset of important spots on the roster. So far the focus has been on coaching changes, and there have been plenty.

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was shown the door, but Kevin O’Connell has always been largely in charge of his staff. The head coach has seen plenty of assistants depart, and that has forced the shuffling of new faces in new positions.

Not all coaching changes have come externally though, and Ryan Cordell is being promoted from within.

Minnesota’s tight ends coach last season was Brian Angelichio. He just was hired as the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Needing to replace him, Kevin O’Connell has promoted Ryan Cordell.

Ryan Cordell started as an intern with the San Francisco 49ers back in 2014. He worked with the organization until joining the Cleveland Browns in 2019. He then came to the Minnesota Vikings in 2022.

Working with the offense as an assistant, Cordell will now how a positional focus added to his plate. Minnesota has some interesting decisions at the spot this offseason as well.

T.J. Hockenson is an obvious restructure candidate. With a cap hit of more than $21 million in 2026, the dead cap number is appealing at $12.5 million. If he doesn’t want to shift his money around, then Hockenson will be gone and the Vikings will be looking for additional talent.

Josh Oliver was extended last summer, and has shined during stretches in which Hockenson was unavailable. Minnesota also drafted Gavin Bartholomew last April, but injury made it so that he never saw the field as a rookie.

The more that Cordell can do to continue leveling up the MN Vikings tight ends, the better. No matter who is under center next season, giving Justin Jefferson breathing room, and the quarterback another target, is a must.
