Liverpool were largely inactive during the January transfer window despite mounting defensive injuries, only finalising a deal for Jeremy Jacquet on deadline day.
The Rennes centre-back will not arrive until later this year, with the exact timing potentially dependent on fitness issues within the squad.
There is little doubt Arne Slot will look to strengthen his defence this summer, particularly after missing out on Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.
The England international had been close to joining Liverpool last summer before the move collapsed, and he instead completed a switch to Manchester City in January. The Reds will now have to turn their attention to alternative targets.
Liverpool also remain focused on recruiting elite young talent, as shown by the signing of Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea in September 2024. The forward has since made 13 senior appearances and signed his first professional contract a year later.
Ngumoha marked his Premier League debut with a dramatic 100th-minute winner against Newcastle in August, becoming Liverpool’s youngest-ever goalscorer at 16 years and 361 days.
He also became the club’s youngest-ever starter at 16 years and 135 days in a 4-0 FA Cup win over Accrington in January 2025. Ngumoha featured for Liverpool’s U18s, U19s and U21s during the 2024–25 season and was handed his senior debut by Arne Slot in an FA Cup tie against Accrington Stanley in January.
According to Lewis Bower, Liverpool currently have 15-year-old Crusaders striker and Northern Ireland youth international Michael Mulholland on trial. He scored twice for the U16s in a 4-0 victory this week and has been called up to the latest Northern Ireland U17 squad.
Mulholland has also captained Northern Ireland at U15 level and is widely regarded as one of the most promising young strikers in the country.
