The Liverpool hierarchy would not have envisaged heading into the summer transfer window needing to fix so many issues prevalent in Arne Slot’s side. Despite that record £450 million outlay last summer, the 2025/26 campaign has shown that Liverpool’s work in shaping this squad is far from complete.
Arne Slot has a hugely talented group, but the balance and overall composition have been exposed at times, particularly once injuries and suspensions started to bite.
On paper, Liverpool boasts an enviable mix of technical quality and youthful energy, yet there are still clear fault lines – not least in midfield, where depth has looked fragile whenever more than one first-choice option has been missing. There is a sense that another window of smart, targeted business will be required to turn an expensively assembled squad into a truly complete one.
The club has already taken one step toward summer recruitment – managing to sign Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet in a £55million deal, who will arrive at Anfield in time for pre-season. However, there seems to be groundwork being laid down for another potential summer signing.
DaveOCKOP.com can exclusively reveal that the representatives of Wolves wonderkid Mateus Mane were recently at the AXA. It was not necessarily transfer talks, more just to get an understanding of the situation at the club amid a potential transfer.
The representatives of Mane have been at top sides across the country to get a more holistic understanding of the levels of interest from the various parties, and it by no means suggests that Liverpool is now going to go all in for the 18-year-old.
Mane has broken into the first team for Wolves this season under Rob Edwards and is already viewed as one of the brightest young prospects in the Premier League. The Portuguese-born talent has managed four goal contributions in nine starts in the Premier League and has also started every league game for the West Midlands side since late December.
He leads his team for most dribbles attempted per 90 minutes (4.83) of players who have made more than one league appearance this term.
After his first senior goal, manager Edwards said of Mane:
“He has got a lot more to go because he is 18 and we are going to see that. Physically, he is going to continue to get better. What I love is his intelligence, his enthusiasm, his bravery and obviously then his technical quality as well. He is ticking a lot of the boxes.”
