How the result of Ole Miss QB’s eligibility hearing could impact Ty Simpson’s NFL draft stock

Trinidad Chambliss eligibility hearing is being held on Thursday, and the result of this may have some impact on the NFL draft stock of Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson.

Chambliss sued the NCAA in an attempt to return to college football in 2026 after his waiver and appeal were denied. He’s seeking both a temporary injunction and a permanent injunction against the NCAA, which would effectively stop the NCAA from barring him from returning.

Two days ago, Ross Dellenger reported that Ole Miss filed a reconsideration to the NCAA over the denial of Chambliss’ eligibility waiver and appeal, and the reconsideration focused on evidence over Chambliss’ 2022 season at Ferris State. He believed he was entitled to a medical redshirt related to a severe case of tonsillitis.

Now, Dellenger reports that the NCAA has denied Ole Miss’ request for a reconsideration of Chambliss’ eligibility waiver.

However, the result from the hearing has not been announced as of this second.

For Chambliss, his collegiate career looks like it could be over. The idea is that Simpson will have more quarterback competition in this year’s class because of this.

In terms of their play later in the season, Simpson and Chambliss went in different directions. Simpson’s play declined as he fought through lingering injuries, but he was quarterbacking the second-worst rushing offense in the SEC. Alabama’s offensive line never found a set starting five, and the constant rotation and lack of chemistry results in Simpson getting blasted in a couple of games, fumbling the football or sustaining a minor injury.

For Chambliss, he did not start out 2025 as the starter, but when Austin Simmons got hurt, it was time for someone to step up. From that moment on, Chambliss played some of the best football that an Ole Miss quarterback has ever played and led the Rebels through the first and second round of the College Football Playoff and came up a tad short in the Fiesta Bowl against Miami.

The game that skyrocketed the draft stock of Chambliss was the Sugar Bowl win over Georgia. Chambliss was making video game-like plays. He finished with 362 yards, 2 touchdowns and a 90.5 QBR.

When looking at the way Simpson’s collegiate career ended, it did not end the way he wanted it to. He broke a rib in the Rose Bowl against Indiana, and that led to him not being able to finish the game. It was the worst showing Alabama has had in the Kalen DeBoer era. The Crimson Tide finished with 3 points and allowed 38.

Despite the sad ending for Simpson, the stuff he put on tape in the middle of the season took the nation by storm, and he was boosted into the Heisman Trophy conversation at one point. He finished the season with 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns and five picks.

Draft analysts like Mel Kiper Jr. have Simpson listed as the No. 2 overall quarterback in the 2026 class, but Chambliss is right behind him on those rankings. If fans learned anything about the 2025 NFL Draft, it was that rankings from draft analysts have no influence on the round that certain quarterbacks are drafted in. This is referring to the fact that Shedeur Sanders was graded a first-round draft pick by almost every draft analyst including Kiper Jr. and the rest of the ESPN NFL Draft crew, but he slid to Day 3 and was taken by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round.

The reality is that Simpson and Chambliss have to control the things they can control, which are Pro Day and NFL Combine performances. Simpson will have to put in the work and separate himself from Chambliss and the rest of the quarterbacks in the draft class.
