The 2025 NFL season is officially over, with the upstart New England Patriots making an incredible run to Super Bowl LX, which ended in disappointment with Sam Darnold and the Seattle Seahawks coming out on top in convincing fashion.

Even though the Patriots didn’t get to cap off a remarkable first season under head coach Mike Vrabel with a Super Bowl title, the future is definitely bright in New England, and it all starts with Pro Bowl quarterback Drake Maye.

One Patriots legend who offers an interesting perspective on what makes NFL quarterbacks great, thanks to his time catching passes from future Hall of Famer Tom Brady in New England and with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is Rob Gronkowski.

The four-time Super Bowl champion tight end couldn’t pinpoint one trait that makes Maye special, but believes his ability to throw deep is something that stands out.

“I’m not really sure, but what I really love about Drake Maye is his deep-ball presence out there on the field,” Gronkowski said in an interview with DJ Siddiqi of RG.com.

“The guy throws a beautiful deep ball,” Gronkowski said of Maye. “When I interviewed him for a sit-down interview with Fox earlier this year, he threw me a pass, and it was a beautiful pass. It was about a 30-yard bomb down the field. I really wasn’t running full speed like that, but just the way he can place the ball and just how soft it is when it hits your hands, that’s his trait that he brings to the table, that can threaten defenses like no other.”

Despite falling short against a very good Seahawks team in the Super Bowl, Maye will likely get another chance to win a ring during his career if he continues on the path he’s going while being coached by Vrabel in New England.

There’s a lot of potential for the Patriots to be a perennial title contender if they can continue to surround Maye with talent and get the most out of the young quarterback.

Patriots Expected to Be ‘Aggressive’ in NFL Free Agency

Mike Ginnitti of Spotrac believes the Patriots will be aggressive in improving their roster during NFL free agency, as he said on The Spotrac Podcast recently.

“I do expect New England to be aggressive this offseason, but it is one of those things where if you want to try to rebuild this team, that is probably the best approach,” Ginnitti said. “There is not anything jumping off the page that needs to change. Obviously, they need to add on the offensive line. Some of the younger players need experience, but they also need some help, some depth. And we’ll see what happens in that regard.

“This is a team that’s got about $33 million in cap space right now, with contracts. They also have 11 draft picks, most of them later in the game after some trades and comp picks. But they’ve done really nice work to replenish themselves from an asset standpoint.”

It’ll be interesting to see what moves the Patriots’ brass make in free agency and whether that results in the team being a heavyweight in the AFC once again in the 2026 NFL season.
