Borussia Dortmund chief provides update on Nico Schlotterbeck contract

Liverpool’s pursuit of Borussia Dortmund centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck is well documented, with DaveOCKOP.com reporting towards the end of last year that the Anfield club had held preliminary talks with the player’s camp.

Schlotterbeck has been one of the standout centre-backs in the Bundesliga since arriving at the Signal Iduna Park in 2022, racking up 146 appearances and developing into a key figure for both club and country. His ability on the ball, left-footed profile, and commanding presence at the back make him a dream fit for what Liverpool need.

The issue for Dortmund is that Schlotterbeck’s contract expires in the summer of 2027, and despite extensive negotiations, nothing has materialised in terms of an extension.

The club have offered a bumper new deal reportedly worth up to €14 million per year – a massive increase on his current wages – along with a release clause of €60 million from the summer of 2027, dropping to €50 million if Dortmund miss out on Champions League qualification. Yet Schlotterbeck has given BVB no encouragement that he wants to commit.

The defender himself admitted last month that he has set a personal deadline for a decision — one that will come before the summer — but refused to reveal when exactly.

Now it seems the Bundesliga side want Schlotterbeck to sign a new deal as soon as possible, with Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl claiming that he is “stepping on the gas” regarding the extension:

“I’m a fan of clarity in all areas,” he said as quoted by Bullinews.

“Sometimes you have to be patient, sometimes you make your own decisions, and in other situations, you depend on the other side. We’re stepping on the gas. Nico knows that we want a decision as soon as possible!”
