Award winner: 19-year-old Kieran Morrison is the first Red to win PL2 Player of the Month since Curtis Jones in 2020, following five goals and an assist in January.

First-team involvement: Already involved in Arne Slot‘s matchday squads, Morrison is expected to be in the squad again for the FA Cup clash with Brighton.

Contract talks: Liverpool have opened negotiations over a new long-term deal, with his current terms expiring in 2027.

Slot’s radar: U21s coach Jay Spearing confirmed Morrison is a frequent topic of conversation in meetings with Slot, who is actively monitoring the winger.

Having started against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup and made the bench on four occasions including Wednesday’s 1-0 win at Sunderland, he is expected to again make the squad for the FA Cup clash with Brighton.

That will come with the prestige of having just been named PL2 Player of the Month for January, having scored five goals and assisted another in four games last month.

No Liverpool player has won the PL2 Player of the Month award since Jones received the prize for February 2020, with Morrison’s award coming six years later.

Liverpool had three nominees for the January prize, with goalkeeper Armin Pecsi and striker Keyrol Figueroa also named on the eight-man shortlist.

Morrison could be considered the next in line to step up to the first team and This Is Anfield understands the 19-year-old’s camp recently began talks over a new contract.

The versatile attacker’s current deal expires this summer but the club hold an option for a further year, however there are intentions to extend that for the long term.

Wolves, Sunderland and Burnley were among the sides interested in a permanent deal last summer while Schalke registered interest in a loan deal in January.

However the decision was made for Morrison to stay on Merseyside and focus on his performances while negotiations continue over his future.

Speaking on The Official Liverpool FC Podcast after the Premier League win over Sunderland – which saw Morrison spend the night as an unused substitute – U21s coach Jay Spearing detailed how close he is to a breakthrough.

“For us as an academy it was an unbelievable occasion to see him get the opportunity to be involved,” Spearing said per LiverpoolWorld.

“In the nicest way, we want them to be around the first team and then when they come back, in the nicest way, don’t want to be around us.

“They want to get back there as quickly as they can.

“We speak to the manager most days, we’re in his office quite a lot, we speak to him probably three-to-four times a week in his office planning sessions.

“So if the manager says who is playing well, if you’re playing well and training well, your name is going to get put in front of him and he will want to see clips, he’ll want to see video so that’s what’s happened to Kieran.”
