Two issues stopped Julian Nagelsmann getting the Chelsea job, Liam Rosenior has already solved one

With Chelsea going through plenty of first team managers since the new owners came in, one name who was previously considered is Julian Nagelsmann.

Nagelsmann is currently in charge of Germany, and has been linked with the Manchester United job on a full-time basis at the end of the season.

Chelsea wanted to interview Nagelsmann before hiring Mauricio Pochettino, with the Blues not convinced he would have a hold of the dressing room and be a likeable figure for the squad.

What changes would you make to our XI?

Todd Boehly and co have brought in plenty of players to form a bloated squad at Stamford Bridge, and working closely with all of those players was going to be important.

Why Julian Nagelsmann didn’t get the Chelsea job

Journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed that Chelsea weren’t convinced Nagelsmann would be able to do this, while also stating that he was not up for a thorough interview process in 2023.

He said to The United Stand: “And I know that when Nagelsmann was on the Chelsea shortlist, there were two issues why he didn’t advance.

“The first was that when they asked about his kind of conduct, and I appreciate there’s two sides to every story, so this is just Chelsea’s perspective, but when they asked about his conduct and how he managed the dressing room and what the players thought of him on a personal level, on a tactical level, on a managerial level, they didn’t get great references and they thought that he might be a risk in terms of fit.

“Then the second thing about Julian Nagelsmann and this is where Chelsea’s perspective is different from those close to Nagelsmann. So Chelsea argue that Nagelsmann said, ‘I don’t want to be part of a process. I don’t want anything thorough. I don’t want to wait. I don’t want to be interviewed five times. I just want you to either offer me the job or not because my CV, my talent speaks for itself.’

“So Nagelsmann was not prepared to wait and entertain a competitive thorough process at least when Chelsea came calling.”

Liam Rosenior solving problems Nagelsmann would have caused

Chelsea’s current manager, Liam Rosenior, has made a very strong start on the pitch, however his impact off the pitch could be making an even bigger impression.

The new boss has called Joao Pedro for plenty of meetings since he arrived at the club, and this is starting to bring the best out of the Brazilian on the pitch.

Given all the reports regarding Nagelsmann’s ability to manage a dressing room, it is clear that Chelsea have made the right call in hiring Rosenior this time around.

The Englishman will be looking to keep up his very strong start to life at Stamford Bridge when they are back in FA Cup action tonight against Hull City.
