Liverpool could revisit Denzel Dumfries as release clause emerges

By now, most Reds fans are aware that Liverpool explored a late-window move for Denzel Dumfries as right-back cover.

By now, most Reds fans are aware that Liverpool explored a late-window move for Denzel Dumfries as right-back cover.

In the final days of the January window, Anfield chiefs sounded out Inter over a possible deal for the Dutch defender, with Conor Bradley ruled out for the season after suffering a serious knee injury against Arsenal. With Jeremie Frimpong also sidelined and Liverpool suddenly light on options on the right, Dumfries’ profile made him an appealing short-term fix f0r Arne Slot’s side.

However, any momentum behind the move quickly ran into a key complication: Dumfries himself was working back from an ankle problem picked up in November, which required surgery in early December. Although his recovery has progressed well and he is now expected to return to action in late February, that timeline was viewed as too much of a gamble for a January reinforcement, leading Liverpool to park the deal rather than commit to an injured defender.

But according to reports in Italy, the story may not be over regarding the Dutch international. FCInter1908 is reporting that the Anfield club could be tempted by a €25 million clause attached to Dumfries available throughout July 2026.

The report states that the 29-year-old plans to leave Inter Milan in the summer, but everything hinges on the offers the Serie A giants receive:

“Next summer there will be a release clause for Denzel Dumfries, who has partially returned to the group these days and is getting closer and closer to full recovery.”

“For the Inter winger, sought above all by Liverpool in the winter market, a clause of €25 million will be active in the summer of 2026 and will be valid for the entire month of July, without exceptions and limitations. The player’s idea is to leave Milan, but everything will depend on the offers that arrive.”

From Inter’s perspective, the upcoming clause is a double-edged sword: the fixed €25m fee limits their negotiating power but offers financial clarity if a sale does happen. With Dumfries closing in on full fitness after his recent injury and the summer window edging closer, his situation is shaping up to be one Liverpool will surely be watching closely.
