Kenneth Gainwell’s Catch Named One Of NFL’s Best Plays Of Season

Kenneth Gainwell’s sensational catch against the Detroit Lions earned him six points and a top-five spot among the NFL’s best plays of the 2025 season. Friday morning, Good Morning Football unveiled its Top 10 plays with Gainwell’s Week 16 grab slotting in at No. 5. The show didn’t offer much commentary about the moment but a picture, or in this case a video, is all that needs to be shown.

It was the most spectacular of Gainwell’s 73 receptions with Pittsburgh. He led all Steelers in catches and easily set a personal best in what was a career year. But his grab against Detroit was the most memorable. Identifying man coverage, Aaron Rodgers checked at the line of scrimmage to motion Gainwell out wide. Despite pass interference, Gainwell tracked the ball and caught it on the way down. He then showed the presence of mind to rise to his feet and race into the end zone, a decision all the more critical given there were just seconds left in the half.

Previously trailing 10-3, the Steelers went into the break tied at 10. Pittsburgh would go on to upset Detroit, 29-24 for one of the team’s best victories of the year.

Gainwell will look to cash in on plays like that. He’s expected to have a more robust free agent market than the meager one that greeted him a season ago. That will make it harder for Pittsburgh to re-sign him. But if Rodgers returns, staying with the Steelers will seem more enticing.

In our top ten, We named it the No. 1 play of the Steelers’ season.

The four plays ahead of Gainwell were Seattle Seahawks RB Zach Charbonnet’s wild two-point conversion, the New York Giants’ trick play touchdown pass thrown by former Steelers WR Gunner Olszewski to QB Jameis Winston, Philadelphia Eagles DT Jordan Davis’ blocked field goal for a touchdown, and Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams’ game-winning touchdown to WR DJ Moore.
