Chelsea FC are celebrating the Lunar New Year by launching a new limited edition kit inspired by the club’s roots. On Monday, (February 9), Chelsea unveiled its Year of The Horse Limited Edition Pre Match Top.

The predominately white jersey features a wraparound graphic of a lion pursuing a horse in a traditional Chinese art style in Eton blue, a nod to the club’s first home strip from 1905. There’s also a Chinese seal on the back neck representing how fans address Chelsea in Mandarin.

Other standout features include a 3D Chelsea crest and Nike flash on the chest. Both the Mens Year of The Horse Top and Womens Year of The Horse Top are £69.99 at the Chelsea Megastore, where the Kids Year of The Horse Top is £59.99.

However, Chelsea says the jerseys are being sold in ‘limited quantities’. The strip was debuted by the men’s team before their Premier League clash with Leeds on Tuesday.

It will also be worn by Chelsea Women when they host Liverpool in the WSL on Sunday. The game is set for a 12pm kick-off to be broadcast on Sky Sports Main Event and the WSL YouTube channel.

Chelsea has launched its limited edition Year of The Horse pre-match shirt.

Announcing its Year of The Horse Top, Chelsea said: “The warm-up jersey harks back to the very beginning of Chelsea shirts which in turn had their own equestrian roots. The Eton blue hue the likes of JT Robertson, Jimmy Windridge and for a handful of games, George ‘Gatling Gun’ Hilsdon, ran out in was lighter and greener than the familiar royal blue Chelsea’s tops soon became.

“For those first matches we had adopted the horse racing colours of Earl Cadogan, the club’s first president back in 1905, and now the Eton blue is back in harmony with the white and black from the shorts and socks of that original kit. Each year in the lunar calendar has one of 12 animals from the Chinese zodiac and the horse represents strength, momentum, independence and endurance.

“Those born in the Year of the Horse are characterised by spirit in motion, confidence, resilience and responsibility – traits that would stand any footballer in good stead, especially as the horse also belongs to those who lead, act decisively, thrive under pressure and earn success through discipline, not shortcuts.”
