Darwin Nunez’s future remains uncertain less than a year after the striker left Liverpool to move to the Saudi Pro League. Nunez spent three years at Anfield before joining Al-Hilal on a permanent deal worth £46million in the summer.

In response, the Reds moved to sign Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, with the combined fees for both players exceeding £200million.

Nunez has gone on to score seven goals across 23 appearances for Al-Hilal, but was handed a blow this week after being removed from the club’s squad list for the Saudi Pro League.

Al-Hilal are only allowed to name a certain number of senior foreign players on their squad list in the league, and had to remove one player to make room for the arrival of Karim Benzema, who was signed from Al-Ittihad during the January transfer window.

As a result, Nunez will no longer be able to feature for Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League for the rest of the season, unless another change is made, but will be able to take part in the AFC Champions League, which has different registration rules.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported that Nunez, as a result of being removed from Al-Hilal’s squad, could be on the move when the summer transfer window opens.

Fenerbahce were linked with a move for Nunez during the January transfer window, but Romano has claimed that this is not a likely transfer at the moment.

Since leaving Liverpool, Nunez has seen his transfer value decrease. Transfermarkt state that Nunez’s current value stands at €35million (£30.5million), which is a drop from his previous valuation from his time at Anfield which stood at €45mllion (£39million).

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Nunez beyond this season, with rumours and speculation of a move away from Al-Hilal appearing more likely.
