Mike Tomlin has called an end to his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers, after serving 19 years as the head coach of the franchise. He never posted a losing season and is considered one of their biggest legends.
In a profession where mostly white coaches dominate, Tomlin was one of the few black coaches to not only get hired but to actually succeed. He won the Super Bowl with them in the 2008 season, and had much success. However, his journey did not start with a good beginning.
Mike Tomlin speaks about growing up without a father
Tomlin caused much shock in the NFL community, by voluntarily stepping down from the Steelers head coaching job. Despite having two years left on his current contract and offers to continue for more, he made the personal decision to step down. Franchise owner Art Rooney II has confirmed the coach had left due to personal reasons, as he wanted to spend more time with his family.

The 53-year-old has previously opened up about his own background, which may explain why he decided to step down for his own children. Tomlin never had his biological father in his life and barely spent time with him, instead being raised by his mother and stepfather. He contrasted it with his own children’s lives and that he was still learning how to be a father despite his own background.
He said, “I didn’t have that father-son relationship as a young guy that they have. I developed it along the way with some powerful men that came into my life. The way they are growing up is different than me, but it’s better.”
The coach further added in regard to working with Pastor Ed Glover from Urban Impact, “It was about me trying to be the best Godly father I can be and acknowledging that I came from a broken home, in line with his organization that works with a lot of disadvantaged youth, particularly those from broken homes.” Tomlin aims to help other fathers to be involved better in their children’s lives, and may have other plans in the near future.
Mike Tomlin and his next plans
There has been considerable interest from other teams who hoped to sign the veteran coach, but he does not plan to do so at least in 2026. He will spend time with his three children Dino, Mason, and Harlyn. The eldest two are sons and have played college football, Dino for Maryland and Boston College, and Mason for the Columbia Lions. The youngest daughter is a gymnast at Georgia.
Instead, there is interest for the ex-Pittsburgh legend from major news networks such as Fox, ESPN and many others who wish to hire him as an analyst. This could be the most likely decision for him, as he will receive offers in the multi-million dollar range while also getting enough time to spend with his family.
As of now, Mike Tomlin has remained tight-lipped about his future but he may reveal his future destination soon enough.
