Rúben Dias has revealed the mindset he adopted when joining Manchester City from Benfica. The Portugal international made it clear that past achievements meant nothing in his new environment.
The defender recently sat down with the Portuguese press to a relaxed interview. We’ve already covered parts of the chat, including Dias’ comments on training with Erling Haaland and his relationship with Bernardo Silva.
Now, more quotes have emerged and relayed by Record in Portugal, focusing on his mentality and approach to success.
Starting from zero
During the interview, Dias was asked about his transition to the Premier League. He explained the principle he applied when making the move to Manchester City.
“The process is tough, intense and demanding,” he stated, as quoted by the show. “But when you move to a professional team, you reach an important conclusion. The brilliant path you’ve taken is nothing more than the starting point for a new stage. You’ve only earned your place in a new race. That was the principle I applied when I arrived at City. Everything I achieved at Benfica was worth zero.”
The comments highlight the mental reset required when stepping up to a higher level. Dias clearly understood that his success in Portugal wouldn’t automatically translate to success in England. He needed to prove himself all over again.
When asked if he considers himself the best centre-back in the world, Dias reaffirmed his competitive mentality. His answer focused on constant improvement rather than past achievements. “More than thinking I am, I want to be the best at every moment,” he explained.
Maintaining elite standards
The Manchester City defender also touched on what he believes is the most difficult aspect of playing at the elite level. His perspective emphasises the ongoing challenge rather than the initial breakthrough.
“The hardest part is maintaining the level,” Dias noted, explaining that he doesn’t view his past achievements as any guarantee in the present. “I don’t see the past and what I did in youth development as a guarantee now.”
His approach reflects the standards at Manchester City. The club demands excellence consistently. There’s no room for complacency or living off past achievements. And his willingness to start from scratch and prove himself again shows the mindset required to succeed at the highest level.
