Alexander Isak has stepped up his recovery from a broken leg with a gym session and light ball work at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre on Friday. The £125m striker was injured in December during a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur, scoring before being caught by Micky Van de Ven and forced off shortly after coming on.
Isak underwent surgery for an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture, with no set return date. His appearance in training is an encouraging sign for Liverpool as they aim to get their record signing back on the pitch.
The Sweden international has struggled with injuries since joining from Newcastle United on September 1, including a groin issue in October. He has made just 10 Premier League appearances, scoring twice.
Speaking last month, Liverpool boss Arne Slot said of Isak’s recovery programme: “He’s not even on the pitch yet. He’s just out of his walker.
“So that tells you that he’s not on the pitch yet and not expected on the pitch today or tomorrow in terms of his recovery work. It’s going to take a while before he’s back – as we knew.”
Sweden manager Graham Potter has noted there is a “chance” the former Newcastle United forward could play during the next international break. Sweden face a crucial World Cup semi-final playoff against Ukraine on March 26.
“I hope they (Isak and Dejan Kulusevski) can play, but these are big injuries…It’s tough to come back from injuries like that by March, but there’s a chance,” Potter said, via Fotboll Direkt.
“Yes, I have spoken to both of them. They are on their way back and are optimistic. They are working very hard at home in the club team in an attempt to play with us in March.”
