ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Anchorage florists and chocolatiers are wrapping up their busiest week of the year—Valentine’s Day week.
According to Alaska Wild Berry Products, the shop has seen 30% more customers this week. Employees worked Friday to finish flower orders and stock sweet treats on the shelves.
“This is kind of like our Super Bowl,” said Dawee Lor, owner of Alaska Wild Berry Products. “We’re kinda of gearing up for the chaos that’s going to happen here in the next 12 hours.”
According to Lor, the shop has seen an increase in chocolate prices. She said floral costs are up 14% to 17%, while her team said chocolate costs are up 15%.
“And it’s really just the tariffs and just what the market is showing. The tariffs are about 10%, and that’s added onto the 15%. So it’s a pretty significant jump,” said DJ Litteral, Alaska Wild Berry Products’ chief commercial officer.
Despite the higher costs, customers are still buying.
“When you’re in love, you really can’t put a price tag on that,” said Kirk McCullough, a customer. “Nothing beats fresh flowers for the missus.”
Across town at Bagoy’s Florist & Home, the shop has also seen prices rise. For the past two years, Kristen Keifer, the store owner, said her team has seen the cost of flower stems increase from 10% to 20%. At the same time, she said the biggest cost increase has been in glassware.
“We’ve seen that go up quite a bit, and with shipping, because it’s such a heavy product to get it up here,” Keifer said. “I would say we’ve had some suppliers just blanket-raise prices 7% across the board.”
Keifer added that her team has had to switch to other vase and arrangement options because certain glassware pieces have become difficult to source.
