The Sacramento Kings have been playing shorthanded all year long, and now they’ll be without another one of their starters for the remainder of the 2025-26 regular season.
According to Chris Haynes, NBA Insider for NBA on Prime and NBATV, “Kings guard Zach LaVine will undergo season-ending surgery on his right hand after the All-Star break.”
LaVine had missed Sacramento’s last three games with what the injury report listed as “right fifth finger soreness.” To put it in simple terms, the pinky finger on his right hand.
BREAKING: Sacramento Kings guard Zach LaVine will undergo season-ending surgery on his right hand after the All-Star break, league sources tell me. He averaged 19.2 points, shot 48 percent from the field and 39 percent from beyond the arc. pic.twitter.com/uph3thRMSD

In the 39 games he participated in this season, LaVine had averaged 19.2 points, 2.3 assists, and 2.8 rebounds while shooting 47.9 percent from the field and 39 percent from three on 6.5 attempts per game.
Despite reportedly being willing to listen to offers for LaVine at the deadline, the Kings’ general manager, Scott Perry, decided it was in their best interest to hold onto the scoring guard. It begs the question: Has LaVineplayed his last game wearing royal purple?
Given the Sacramento’s current record of 12-44, the worst in the NBA, and their recent shift towards playing their younger players heavier minutes, it’s not a notable blow for Sacramento this season, but something to monitor moving forward, as the 30-year-old has a $48.9 million player option for next season that would be shocking for him to turn down.
Kings head coach Doug Christie is expected to continue leaning on players such as Nique Clifford and Devin Carter in those guard roles, while still implementing veterans DeMar DeRozan and Russell Westbrook in lesser roles.
Two-way contracts Isaiah Stevens and Daeqwon Plowden have also seen greater opportunities in Sacramento’s recent games, but now LaVine will not even be an option for them in the final 26 games of their 2025-26 regular season.
