Liverpool have a player now rivalling Bruno Fernandes in one Premier League statistic, Salah also in top 10

Florian Wirtz has become one of Liverpool’s best players in the last couple of months.

Some may argue that Dominik Szoboszlai is the most crucial talent at Anfield right now.

Steven Gerrard seems to think Szoboszlai has been the best overall this term, but there can be no denying the importance of Wirtz.

Together, the German and Hugo Ekitike have formed a brilliant partnership that has flourished of late, already combining for six goals across all competitions this season.

But while Wirtz is linking up with Ekitike the most, he has created many chances for his other Liverpool teammates.

Most chances created from open play in the Premier League

Wirtz is already rivalling Kylian Mbappe on the chance-creation front in all competitions this term.

Meanwhile, in the Premier League, only Bruno Fernandes has created more from open play.

Steven Gerrard verdict on Florian Wirtz

Wirtz most recently earned praise in the 1-0 win over Sunderland on Wednesday evening.

Steven Gerrard covered that tie and said he had been Liverpool’s best player.

“He’s been Liverpool’s best player. He looks like he’ll be the one to open the door. He’s very effective when he stays the other side of the midfield, he doesn’t need to come deep, leave that to Gravenberch and Mac Allister. He allows them to penetrate centrally.

“This is where he’s brilliant, earlier pass from Gakpo and it’s a fantastic touch, takes it back away from the defender and he’s really unlucky [hitting the post]. He’s looked the likely one.”

Danny Murphy also highlighted an underrated part of Wirtz’s game after Liverpool beat Sunderland.
