Ibrahima Konate is heading into a defining stretch at Liverpool football club.

The 26-year-old is in the final months of the contract he signed after arriving from RB Leipzig in 2021, with his deal due to expire in June.

That has naturally stirred up noise, including links with clubs abroad, and talk that Liverpool could lose a key defender for nothing if a renewal is not agreed.

On the pitch, Konate’s season has had ups and downs, but his availability has stood out.

In a campaign where Liverpool have dealt with defensive injuries, he has been one of the few senior options the manager can rely on.

He has also rebuilt his rhythm after a difficult personal period last month, and his recent displays have helped steady Liverpool in tight games.

That context matters because Liverpool’s centre-back situation is not exactly crowded.

Virgil van Dijk has been his main partner, and the drop-off behind them has been a problem whenever injuries hit, like has happened with Joe Gomez and Jeremy Frimpong.

So with contract deadlines approaching and pressure rising, the conversation around Konate has moved from speculation to something more serious.

Slot has now confirmed that Liverpool are actively working on it.

He said via Liverpool Echo, “We are in talks with him so that tells you what we want. It’s clear we would like him to stay but negotiations are ongoing so let’s see where that ends.”

Slot then made Liverpool’s position even clearer, “We wouldn’t be in negotiations if we didn’t want him to stay.”

The Liverpool boss also defended Konate’s overall level this season, while admitting how fine margins shape opinions.

Slot said, “He had a lot of good games earlier in the season but then he was also part of the reason why we conceded a goal.”

He added, “His general performances were good but then a small mistake he made immediately led to a goal and so he was judged differently.”

Slot then underlined why Liverpool cannot afford to lose him.

“But he has had a very good partnership with Virgil since I’ve been here and, just like Virgil, he has always been fit. Touch wood.”

And he finished with the key point, “These two are vital for us, not only because of the quality they have but because of the lack of options we have behind.”
