Liverpool had been eyeing a move for Dayot Upamecano on a free transfer this summer but the defender has now committed this future to Bayern Munich

Liverpool’s hopes of signing Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano on a free transfer this summer have been dashed after it was confirmed he had penned a new contract with the German club until 2030.

The Reds have signed Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes ahead of the 2026-27 season with the player completing a medical and signing his Anfield deal on deadline day. He will join up with the rest of the squad in the summer.

However, more reinforcements are still needed with Ibrahima Konate out of contract this summer while Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both out of contract in 2027.

Upamecano was viewed as a potential market opportunity as he is widely regarded as one of European football’s top defenders. Liverpool had also been looking at signing Marc Guehi on a free transfer but that planned move was scuppered when Manchester City snapped the England international up for £20m in January.

A club statement from Bayern confirmed: “Dayot Upamecano has signed a new contract at Bayern until 30 June 2030 as the club secures the long-term services of a pillar of the team. The 27-year-old France international has been at the Allianz Arena since the 2021/22 season, so far winning three Bundesliga titles and three domestic Supercups.”

Jan-Christian Dreesen, FC Bayern CEO said: “Dayot Upamecano has matured into a top-level player with us. We’re delighted he’ll continue his journey at Bayern, also proving once again our status in international football. His clear personal commitment is a strong message for our sporting course and for the good togetherness within the team and the club.”

Max Eberl, FC Bayern board member for sport added: “Dayot Upamecano is another central figure in our team who we’ve been able to extend with. A squad needs anchor points, and we’ve got the next with Dayot. The question often isn’t who you sign but who you develop. Dayot has matured into a top international player here at Bayern. We’re looking forward to continuing our journey together.”

Christoph Freund, FC Bayern sporting director also spoke on the agreement, and said: “Dayot Upamecano brings a really strong combination of speed, physicality and anticipation to our team. The way he plays is perfect for our style. And he’s developed into a truly world-class defender and leader here at Bayern. The whole package he brings is hugely valuable for our squad. We’re happy he’s staying with us.”

Upamecano himself added: “I’m really happy to be staying at Bayern and continuing to play in this team. We’ve got a great team and a great coach. We’ve got big goals together. In life, it’s always about mentality. I give my all for my teammates, in every training session, want to keep a clean sheet in every game and want to win as many titles as possible with Bayern.”
