Players face tough challenges on the field in American football, and success often comes from hard work and preparation. One of the standout players in the NFL today is Christian McCaffrey, a running back for the San Francisco 49ers.
He attributes much of his success to his father, Ed McCaffrey. Ed, who played in the NFL as a wide receiver and won three Super Bowl championships, taught Christian that even the smallest decisions can impact an athlete’s journey to greatness. In high school, Christian had a rule against wearing jeans to promote discipline and focus.

Growing up in Colorado, Christian went to Valor Christian High School, where students were encouraged to wear jeans or khakis. However, his father, Ed, had a different perspective about clothing. He believed that wearing jeans could be uncomfortable and limit movement, thereby draining the energy needed for training.

The reason was because jeans are heavy on the legs and wasted energy.

“You’re wearing jeans to school? Come on, you need to be comfortable and relaxed during the day,” Christian remembers his dad saying. Ed even made slits in Christian’s pants to help him move more easily, showing his dedication to making every part of Christian’s daily life as easy and efficient as possible.
This approach was about more than just clothing. It reflected Ed’s belief in using energy effectively for better performance.
Dad’s strict manual for Christian McCaffrey’s success
Ed had some strict rules that went beyond just what to wear. For example, bedtime was always 7:30 p.m. until Christian McCaffrey reached eighth grade, and phones were taken away at night to help avoid distractions.
Soda was off-limits as Ed believed in keeping a healthy diet. When Christian cramped up during a sports game, Ed took action by arranging treatments on Fridays to help him recover and prevent future cramps.
This involved giving Christian a special saline solution to keep him hydrated. Ed was also very particular about energy use. He wouldn’t allow Christian to squint in bright sunlight or get too loud at school events. Ed often reminded him, “If you squint, you’re wasting energy.”
When Christian was younger, he faced consequences for what Ed called “jersey tackles,” which meant being grabbed by the shirt without being brought to a complete stop. This was part of Ed’s way of teaching him how to run properly and stay strong.
These habits, tough at the time, forged Christian’s resilience. “It’s like hard when you’re a kid, now it’s not hard,” he reflected.
Drafted in 2017, Christian has earned Pro Bowl honours, All-Pro selections, and the 2023 Offensive Player of the Year award, showcasing versatility in rushing and receiving.
Ed’s methods, rooted in his own 13-year NFL career, prepared four sons for professional sports. Today, as a father himself, Christian balances firmness with understanding, proving that disciplined foundations lead to enduring success on the field.
