Liam Rosenior had singled out the Chelsea defender for praise earlier this month with the World Cup looming large.
Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah faces a battle to get into the England squad for the World Cup this summer after the recent resurgence of Manchester United, according to ex Blues defender Jason Cundy.
The 26-year-old has cemented a role in the starting XI at Stamford Bridge this season and, a year after he was recalled from loan at Crystal Palace, is a key member of the squad. Chalobah has made 25 Premier League appearances this term and played 90 minutes in every match since serving a suspension against Liverpool at the start of October.
Trevoh Chalobah faces fight for place in England squad
Chalobah has one cap for England, which came in a 3-1 defeat to Senegal last summer and is vying for a place in the World Cup squad. Speaking about the player on talkSPORT, Cundy predicted that the return to form of Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire could present a problem for the Chelsea man.
He said: “Fair play to the boy, mentally that shows huge strength and belief. He’s justified starting. You can’t argue with that, most Chelsea fans would say the number one centre-half this season is Trev.
“It’s going to be touch and go. He’s in the conversation, so is Harry Maguire. It’s funny, you go back three or four weeks ago and no one was talking about Maguire. Because of the experience Maguire has got, that might go against him [Chalobah].
“He has been as consistent as anyone, in terms of English centre-halves too. Tuchel knows him and there’s a very strong chance he’ll be in there.”
Liam Rosenior praises ‘fantastic’ defender
Chalobah has earned the praise of new manager Liam Rosenior since the coach was appointed at Stamford Bridge. Speaking prior to the 3-1 over Wolves at Molineux, Rosenior said: “Trevoh has been one of our brightest spots in terms of his performances and in terms of what he understands, what we want, not just on the pitch and tactically, but in terms of the culture and what he gives the group.
“He loves this club. He understands what it takes to win and he's made a fantastic impression on my staff and me so far.”
