Tape Breakdown

One thing that immediately stands out about Regis is his quickness. He’s not your typical plodding interior defensive lineman, and he pairs that with a motor that is always running hot. While his size isn’t ideal, his quickness can make up for that at times.

While he doesn’t make the play here, he descends quickly on Jeremiyah Love and would’ve finished the play if there was a missed tackle.

Against South Carolina, he follows the option the whole way and chases down the running back in the backfield.

In addition to his quickness, Regis uses his hands well through swipes to help him win and get to the ball carrier even if he’s locked up at the point of attack.

Where Regis struggles the most is as a pass-rusher. He relies on a bull rush, but he isn’t quick enough off the ball most of the time to get leverage and usually winds up locked up with the defensive lineman. This is what a typical pass-rush rep looks like from Regis.

He can win with the bull, but it’s not often that he does. He did against Florida, though, and it led to the first and only forced fumble of his college career against DJ Lagway. He was able to fire off the ball and get leverage, but it just doesn’t show up enough in his tape. Compared with his lack of size, it’s hard to see him becoming an effective pass-rusher at the next level.

But what Regis does do well in the passing game is something the Steelers will notice. He’s very good at getting his hand in the passing lanes, as his 10 career pass breakups tell you. Nine of those came within the last two seasons.

He also nearly comes up with a knockdown here, and it appears he may have tipped this pass to force an interception.

For the most part, Regis also does a sound job of maintaining gap integrity. He forced the running back outside here, then was able to come and make the play.

It’s rare, but he can overpursue and get himself out of position at times.

However, for the most part, Regis’ gap integrity is sound and is one of the strengths of his game.

Conclusion

Regis is an interesting case. I have concerns about his size translating at the next level, but his motor, speed and athleticism, as well as his gap integrity make him someone very capable of playing a role in the NFL. While I think his upside is limited to a two-down player, he has the tools to still be an effective run stopper. He can at least compete on passing downs if needed due to his IQ and ability to get his hands in the passing lanes, and if he improves his speed in firing out, his bull rush can be more effective than it is at present. There’s a lot of Rakeem Nunez-Roches in his game.
