Liverpool’s recent transfer windows have shown a clear pattern.
The club have been forced to keep looking at defensive depth.
Injuries have played a big part in that story.
Even new signings have not escaped the problem.
Young defender Jeremy Jacquet, who was brought in as part of the club’s long-term planning, also suffered an injury setback soon after the signing was officially confirmed.
That situation looks to have kept Liverpool active in the full-back market.
The summer is already shaping up to be similar.
One of the names now drawing serious attention is one that has been previously linked with the Merseyside outfit.
The 28 year old defender plays as a right-back but can also operate higher up the flank.
His game is based on energy, defensive discipline, and tactical flexibility.
Zeki Celik has spent years in Serie A and has built a reputation as a dependable squad player who rarely causes problems off the pitch.
His contract situation has now made him even more attractive.
With months left on his deal, he could arrive either cheaply or even for free.
That has created strong competition for his signature.
According to Tuttosport via ForzaRoma, “The Turk can already sign on a free transfer for next season with any team, unless a renewal with Roma is forthcoming, which currently appears far from imminent.”
His current deal with Roma is set to expire in the upcoming summer window.
The club attempted to secure his future by offering him a new three-year contract that would pay around €2.8 million per season.
However, he turned down that proposal, and the exact reasons behind his decision have not been made clear.
The report continued, “Roma’s Turkish international, whose versatility is reminiscent of Darmian, is a strong appeal to the Nerazzurri.”
“This is especially true given the opportunity to sign him for free.”
“Evaluations are underway. Meanwhile, Celik has declined the Giallorossi’s three-year, €2.8 million-per-season offer to extend his contract.”
That rejection has left his situation wide open heading into the final months of the season.
From Liverpool’s point of view, the opportunity comes at the right time.
With defensive reinforcements needed and finances always a factor, a smart market move makes sense.
He is now in a position where he can agree a pre-contract with another club ahead of next season if Roma do not resolve the situation soon.
At this stage, a renewal does not look close. That puts Liverpool in a strong position if they decide to step up their interest in the coming weeks.
