Seahawks scheduled to interview 49ers assistant for vacant OC job

You can add another name to the list of candidates for the Seahawks’ vacant offensive coordinator position: Brian Fleury, currently the run game coordinator and tight ends coach for the San Francisco 49ers.

ESPN reported that Fleury was scheduled to interview on Saturday for the OC job, which became open when Klint Kubiak left to become the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Fleury becomes the sixth known candidate overall and the second external candidate, joining Connor Senger, the offensive pass game specialist for the Arizona Cardinals who was reported to have interviewed Friday.

The Seahawks also have four known in-house candidates — quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko, passing game coordinator Jake Peetz, assistant offensive line coach/run game specialist Justin Outten and tight ends coach Mack Brown.

Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said earlier this week on his radio show on Seattle Sports 710 that “I think a really important part of what we want to do is have continuity” and the odds would still seem to point to the Seahawks likely promoting one of the four internal candidates

Seattle’s desire to keep Outten in the fold became even clearer Friday when it was revealed the team denied the Raiders — and Kubiak — permission to interview him for the same position he holds with the Seahawks (teams can deny permission for lateral moves).

But the news of the Fleury move indicates the Seahawks are at least exploring some outside options. The NFL’s Rooney Rule also stipulates teams must interview at least two minority candidates for all coordinator positions.

Fleury has been with the 49ers since 2019 and has been the tight ends coach each of the past four seasons while also adding the run game coordinator title this season.

Fleury played quarterback at Towson University in Towson, Md., from 1999-2002 before getting into coaching and has worked in the NFL since 2013.
