Manchester United are likely to miss out on one of their transfer targets with Inter Milan set to activate a buy-back clause this summer

Manchester United are likely to miss out on signing Aleksandar Stankovic this summer with Inter Milan set to trigger a £20m buy-back clause for him at the end of the season.

United and Spurs are expected to make a move for Stankovic in the summer while Arsenal and Chelsea have also been linked.

He is a defensive midfielder, but also a deep-lying playmaker, so could help to win the ball back, but then provide attacking returns too, much like Casemiro has done in recent weeks under Michael Carrick.

Casemiro announced during January that he will leave the club at the end of the season, as he isn’t signing a new contract when his current Old Trafford deal expires. When the 33-year-old does leave, he will need to be replaced, so the Red Devils will have to find a suitable successor.

Brighton’s Carlos Baleba has been linked to United, and so has Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, although both are expected to cost up to £100m, which could become a financial problem for United.

Stankovic would have been seen as a more suitable option in terms of finances, but now a transfer looks unlikely with Inter Milan set to jump to the front of the queue to sign him.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano gave an update on X: “Inter have already started planning for Aleksandar Stanković buy back clause ahead of June. €23m buy back available this summer, €25m for June 2027 but club already making plans for upcoming June.”
